چکیده

We present a new algorithm to generate rainfall estimates with the thermal infrared (IR) band. The algorithm merges ancillary passive microwave (PMW) data from SSM/I with IR images to generate rainfall rates at the spatial and temporal resolutions of the IR sensor. Comparison against independent land-GPCC data shows how the algorithm slightly improves the GOES precipitation index (GPI) estimates, being also very easy to implement. The algorithm combines a maximum entropy estimate of the probabilistic distribution function (PDF) of the rainfall rates with the IR brightness temperature of the clouds, generating a fused product. This combines the potentialities of the more direct rainfall estimation of the PMW sensors with the timely IR data, increasing also the spatial resolution. The algorithm can be applied both with a bulk parameterisation derived with ancillary data, or be fine-tuned with timely PMW measurements. We show how to apply the algorithm for the direct generation of estimates, and the possible applications of the method.

Fusion of Thermal Infrared and Visible Images Based on Multi-scale Transform and Sparse Representation

Due to the differences between the visible and thermal infrared images, combination of these two types of images is essential for better understanding the characteristics of targets and the environment. Thermal infrared images have most importance to distinguish targets from the background based on the radiation differences, which work well in all-weather and day/night conditions also in land s...

Generating Multi-Sensor Precipitation Estimates Over Radar Gap Areas

Generating a multi-sensor precipitation product over radar gap area is the objective of the present study. A merging approach is developed to improve Satellite-based Precipitation Estimates (SPE) by merging with ground-based Radar Rainfall (RR) estimates because remote satellites are the only source that can collect information from areas where are inaccessible by ground-based radar and/or rain...

Meteosat data. An extensive continental scale validation against synoptic station data of both the daily MIRA precipitation product and a normalized geostationary IR-only GOES

This paper describes a new high-resolution multi-platform multi-sensor satellite rainfall product for Southern Africa covering the period 1993-2002. The Microwave Infra-Red Algorithm (MIRA) employed to generate the rainfall estimates combines high spatial and temporal resolution Meteosat infrared data with infrequent Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) overpasses. A transfer function relati...
